Flying past Mother's Day

Meredith Whitman

Last Sunday was Mother's Day. I don't mind celebrating it. I had no idea that many people have an issue with it.

No, I am not a mother. No, I do not feel left out. I also have a mother who is still alive and kicking. Okay, not kicking. I don't think I ever saw her kick anything, but she is very much alive. I did not have a terrible mother or a terrible relationship with my mother.

I understand why Mother's Day is a sad occasion for many people for a variety of reasons some of which I listed above. I get that. What I don't get is how as a society people think that those of us who are not mothers are not a valuable as those who are.

Yes, rightly so mothers should be honored and celebrated. And yes they should have their day. In fact they should probably have an entire freaking century for all that they do. Celebrate them loud and clear. Just don't forget about the rest of us. Don't reduce my worth to what comes out of my uterus or for what did not. And while you are highly celebrating mothers why not really celebrate them with better maternity care, child care, health care, and equal pay. That would be a true celebration.
