Flying goal-less (re-post)

I recently reached one of my goals. Now I have to decide what to do next. One option was to continue doing what I am doing now until the end of the year and decide then. That sounds appealing because that means that I can coast along not thinking about doing anything. That is not practical because I always have goals. I always know what I want to do next. I am not sure I can allow myself to have a goal of not having a goal. But isn't that a goal? Couldn't I spin it and say that I am taking a break and will let things marinate in my head until the first of the year? That sounds like a very long time not to do anything.

But is it really not doing anything? I will maintain my current level and maybe surpass my goal. I just won't make any final decisions until later. I don't know. I spent most of my seven mile run on Sunday trying to figure out how make a goal of not having a goal work. Yes, the diversion was great, but I still have not figured it out yet.

I recently wrote about committing to the process, not the outcome. I agree with that, but I think I am still supposed to have a desired outcome. I am supposed to strive to reach it while enjoying the journey. Isn't that what I said?

Even high achievers are allowed to take a break every once in a while, right? I am giving myself permission to flounder. Not endlessly, just for a few more hours. I will have a conversation later this afternoon with a professional to help me decide what my next goal with be. I will remain temporarily goal-less until then. That is my short term goal. See? I knew I could not be without a goal for long!

You have to know what you want to get.
