Flying Mighty High at 50

Madonna is turning 50 this year and so are several of my sister girlfriends. My sister girlfriends are beautiful vibrant women. They are a true testament to living well (most of the time), praying a lot, and having fun. As I bear witness to them, I do not see their bodies falling apart, their spirits dampening because they feel that they are on the downhill slope of life, or their quest for excitement dwindling. In fact one ran a marathon, one is getting Botox, one got married for the 3rd time, and another is kicking her business into high gear.

These sister girlfriends are not afraid to live life the way they choose. This is certainly not the time to slow down. Research shows that currently the life expectancy at birth in the United States hit a record high of 78.1 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Life expectancy for white women is 81 years and 76.9 for African-American women.
That means my friends could have over 20 more years to shake their groove thing or whatever it is that they are doing. I find it amazing. I find it inspiring. I find it empowering. Some of them have been brave enough to let their hair turn gray gracefully. Others have turned up the volume with luminous hues.

It doesn't matter, they are having fun. They are having the kind of fun that can only happen when you are completely comfortable in your own skin. When you truly believe that not standing up for yourself is punishable by death. The kind of fun that comes with intention.

So, I proudly salute all the women who are 50ish, turning 50, and pretty darn close. May they continue to be an inspiration to themselves all those of us who are not too far behind.

I'm about to turn 50 in January and I must say that I am flying high! It's been a year of accomplishment for me in that I received my Ph.D. which I had been working towards for four years. I'm having fun now! I am meeting new and exciting people, and I continue to learn things as I open myself up to new experiences. My relationship with God has taken on a new meaning as I realize more and more that my strength comes from him and that his presence in my l life guides me and his love will never fail. I look forward now to each new day with a fresh perspective and I am truly looking forward to January. I hope you will celebrate with me as I fly high into a new year filled with new goals and expectations.

I am so proud of you. I will be with the Biltmore crew (Kristine is coming down) this weekend and we will certainly raise our glasses to you. I might even wear the booties you gave me! You are truly an inspiration to me. May you continue to fly higher and show the younger sister girlfriends how it is done!
