We have all seen the stories about the economy and how it has impacted businesses. Thousands of people are losing their jobs. That reality hit home with me the other day. A woman in my class had been working for a company since college. She had recently been given a raise. She did not even blink at the state of the economy because she felt safe and secure. That world ended when she was let go. She had never worked anywhere else and did not even know what to do.
All she could think of doing was praying and she did a lot of that in those dark hours. Probably more than she has done in her entire life. In disappointment, fear, and disillusionment she posted her resume on the Internet that very night. The next day a recruiter called her and she had an interview. The company hired her on the spot. She will be making more money, getting better benefits, and has more room to grow now! She is excited about the potential. This company will pay for her schooling to get her certifications and is willing to put her in positions to develop her leadership skills.
All that came out of a rude awakening that business is not always kind to those who strive to serve it best. She would have never left the other company on her own. Many myths were shattered in her head that day. While she appreciates this new opportunity, she will forever keep her eyes and ears open. She knows that she is no more immune than the rest of us.
The morale of the story is that no matter how desolate things appear, there is a flip side. It might now come the next day, the next month, or the next year. Just know that it is coming.
