I had the beginnings of a very hostile conversation with my favorite husband Friday night. I say the beginnings because I decided in mid thought not to continue. He kept trying to prove his point by telling me that people needed to get the chip off of their shoulders because we had elected a Black president. As if that makes all right with the world. Again, I tried to walk away and just managed to without telling him that he is a White man and was not in a position to talk to me about racism, sexism, or discrimination. Part of me is glad that he thinks the country has completely healed, the other part of me wants to hit him in the head with a cast iron skillet.
That leads me to this story about "Mammy-gate". Apparently the wife Kansas City Mayor called a city employee "Mammy"more than once. Can you believe it? There are witnesses to prove it. If it had happened to me, I think I would have stared in disbelief. The employee having better sense than I, suited for racial and sexual harassment. The mayor contends that he and his wife did nothing wrong. The employee is just upset because they would not lend her $5,000. He also claims that the employee and her family were part of the mayor's social circle until she was not given the $5,000. He announced that he settled solely because it was best for the city to stop lawyer's fees since he had an attorney representing his interests.
I do not know what cause the battle or if they were all friends. Calling an African American woman 'mammy' in any context is wrong. I hope it does not happen as much as I fear it does. Just because the country has elected an African American president does not mean that we live in a post-racist society. There is still much work to be done. We must keep up the good fight.
