Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano is a a former state attorney general. She has expertise in immigration and border security issues. She is President-elect Barack Obama's top choice to head the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Hooray for smart, competent women! She was Anita Hill's lawyer during the infamous Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings. She is Arizona's third woman governor, and the first woman to win re-election. She was chosen by Time magazine as one of the top five best governors in 2005. When she becomes the head of the DHS, she will responsible for everything from aviation and maritime security to disaster response and protecting the president. The agencies under her command will include the Coast Guard, Secret Service, Border Patrol, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
This is an exciting time in our nation. Hopefully more qualified and diverse people will be given the opportunity to serve our country at this level. That is the only way to silence the naysayers who believe that skin and gender are more important than skill sets.
