Flying with Niagara Falls

Millions of gallons of water rocket over Niagara Falls every minute – about 750,000 gallons each second! Can you imagine? I could not until I visited them. Even the television does not do the falls justice.

They are magnificent, simply breathtaking. I am glad I had a passport and could walk over to Canada (my first time ever walking into another country). The view is much better from the Canadian side because you can see all three falls at once. Until getting there I did not even know there were three falls (the horseshoe, bridal veil, and American).

The falls played a huge role in the underground railroad. Harriet Tubman led slaves over the  Suspension Bridge and the Niagara River at Black Rock, near Buffalo. They traveled on boats from Lewiston and Youngstown. And some even swam. They wanted to get to Canada where they were free.

Looking at the falls I cannot imagine having the courage to walk over them or near them to freedom. I am afraid of heights and that would be terrifying for me. I only hope that I would have been brave enough to think less about me and more about those coming up behind me. I hope that I would have been fearless or at least act like I was. I will be forever thankful to those who took the risk.
