Flying with Deborah Sampson

Happy Birthday Deborah Sampson Gannett! She is the 1st known American woman to dress up as a man and join the Army. She took the name Robert Shurtleff. Her church (First Baptist Church of Middleborough in Massachusetts) excommunicated her when its member heard about her deed. When she was shot in the leg, she fixed her own wounds so that no one would discover that she was a woman. The wound never healed properly and she was sent to the hospital and was discharged from the military. Later Paul Revere would speak on her behalf so that she her pension was the same amount as the men.

So, who says women should not do what they want to do? Who's going to stop us, unless we stop ourselves?
