Flying with Lilly Ledbetter, again

Awhile ago I wrote about the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Well, now it is a signed bill! It actually happened on January 29, 2009. Funny, I did not see people dancing in the streets. I would have and I will today, tomorrow, and the next day.

The law effectively nullifies a 2007 Supreme Court decision that said workers had only 180 days to file a pay-discrimination lawsuit. Ledbetter said she didn’t become aware of a pay discrepancy until she neared the end of her 19-year career at a Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant in Gadsden, Ala. She sued, but the Supreme Court in 2007 said she missed her chance.

Okay, ladies, this is one step closer to equality. This bill gives people essential tools to challenge discriminatory pay practices. Let's hope that more work on the Family and Medical Leave Act comes next. That law ensures that workers no longer have to fear losing their job if they become sick or pregnant, or if they take leave to care for a new baby or a seriously ill family member. For workers who have access to this leave, it allows them to continue to hold a job during times of family responsibilities, build up their salary histories, and save for retirement - creating critical economic security for their families. The act left out more than 40 percent of the workforce, and disproportionately left out low-wage workers. And the leave guaranteed by the act is unpaid, so it is inaccessible to many workers.

Let's celebrate the first victory and make sure you tell others about this. We cannot sit back and not share knowledge.
