Flying counting my blessings

I am being more grateful and making sure I am counting my blessings. I am also not going to block them anymore. The other day a friend told me that he needed to tell me something. He wanted to tell me on the phone, not by text. He said he had been lying to me and did not want to continue doing that in the new year. Of course my mind was racing trying to figure out what he could be talking about. We are not romantic so if he had a girlfriend or was married that would have been weird, but not major.

This friend had been helping me out in the midst of my struggle. He would text me that he had sent me money via Western Union. When things got better for me I wanted to repay him, but he said no. He said he owed me. (We knew each other in the 7th grade and certain things transpired). Anyway, I was thankful for his assistance and wanted to pay him back. He kept saying it was nothing. So I stopped trying.

When we finally chatted he told me that he had lied about having a job and an apartment. He had been living in an abandoned car and then a shelter for the past two years. He got an apartment in December. I was speechless. I asked him why he sent me money. He simply said, "You needed help". I asked him why he did not allow me to repay him and he said "You needed it". Then he told me how difficult things were for him during that time.

I can only surmise that it made him feel good to be able to help someone while he was in the depth of despair himself. And now he was apologizing to me because he lied about his circumstances. He did not want me to know. I assured him that I was not judging him now or then. I told him that I understand that life throws us curves that may land us in very uncomfortable places. And we do not always learn the lessons we are supposed to learn.

From now on I will accept the assistance offered because people need to bless others. I need to bless people. God works through people. Remember that and be thankful. Be a blessing and allow someone to bless you because that just might be the blessing he/she needs.
