Flying with Nebraska?

I have been biting my tongue long enough about this, but last night I heard that another teenager was dropped off in Nebraska under the Safe Haven law. In case you missed it, Nebraska passed a Safe Haven law. This law allows parents to leave their children at licensed hospitals without fear of prosecution unless abuse can be proved. This law was designed to protect newborns from being dumped in trash cans or other unsavory places. Okay, I get that.

What I don't get is how parents can abandon older children just because they are tired of being parents. Let me say that I am not a parent, but I do know that there is responsibility that comes with raising children. I can understand and appreciate the struggles that many parents have, especially single parents. I find it hard to believe that dumping your kid off to be placed in the foster care system is always the answer. And what is the conversation that they have with their kids? "Sorry, I tried for 13 years and it just isn't working for me"?

Many of these children are getting counseling to assist them in dealing with being left. As if they do not have enough worries. These are not babies. They have friends, were in schools, and have been with a family their entire life. People are coming from other states to leave children in Nebraska. All of the other states with Safe Haven laws stipulate children under the age of one.

Nebraska will eventually change its law. What will happen to the children whose parents really don't want them after that? Will they disappear or be abused? What is this saying about our country and its culture? It is a very sad day in this country when a law designed to protect infants turns into a 'get rid of your kid free' pass.

Do not drive to Nebraska if you need help with your children, use this website and other local agencies: http://www.dhs.dc.gov/dhs/site/default.asp. Also try http://www.211.org/.

well in states where they don't have this, people just leave their babies in fields and trash cans

Most states have a safe haven law. It just limits the protection to infants under the age of 1.
