Flying with Thursday's Word by Brenda Smith

Thursday's Word

Stefanus Martanto Setyo Husodo
You shall have a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit above (Genesis 6:16)

Noah and his family were not to look down or around for their salvation, they were to look towards heaven. In the same way the believer is to keep his eyes focused on Jesus and not on the world around him or hell below him. Jesus is always taking our eyes off the temporary and refocusing them on the eternal. “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) Floods are devastating. They destroy lives, animals, and everything that is in its path. The water seems to come from out of nowhere, or you wake up from being asleep and it is all around you.

Sometimes in life we can strive too much and carry things for too long. We become bogged down with worry, stress, and fatigue. God wants us to learn to take things a bit easier in life. When Noah was to build the ark he knew exactly what a boat was and how it was to be built. But, Noah did not build the ark.. God did. Noah built something that looked like a big rectangular, wooden box. It was not shaped like a boat or a ship. More like a wooden chest. It wasn’t designed to sail and it wasn’t designed to be propelled. It didn’t need to have a thinned bow to cut through the water when it was being propelled by oars as they were in ancient times or propelled by the wind in the sail because it wasn’t going to be propelled. It was a cruise to nowhere. There wasn’t anywhere to go. It was only designed to float. It had no oars. No sails. No pilot. No captain. There was no steering wheel, there was no rudder, there was no navigator. IT WAS JUST A BOX.

This was a water preserver. God used this wooden chest to preserve Noah’s life and that of his family. He was going to introduce a new day in a new world and sustain the life of God’s people. Noah was a ship builder – but this was not a ship. God gave Noah a window so he would always look up to the one who would take care of him for the rest of his life. Look up saints! God promised to always take care of you.
