Flying with Thursday's Word by Brenda Smith

Thursday's Word

Brian Jimenez
Do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:16 (NIV)
(Taken from a devotional in The Upper Room)

Many years ago, a former student stopped by my office with a Christmas gift. As she handed me the paper bag, she smiled and thanked me for the study tips I had given her during the semester. Because I knew that she and her family often struggled to pay her tuition and other college costs,
I
had not expected a gift from her.

I opened the bag and pulled out the gifts — an apple, an orange, and a large peppermint candy stick. The student said that she wanted to buy something more expensive but that these gifts were all she could afford. I received several other gifts that Christmas, but I have always remembered this former student’s generosity.

Just as the young woman shared with me, God gives us opportunities to share and is pleased when we extend kindness to others. Today we can reach out to people in simple ways — a phone call, a hug, or a kind word. By doing good and sharing with others, we show our gratitude for God’s love and mercy.

It does not matter what the gift you give, as long as you give the gift in love. Big price tags does not necessarily make better gifts.

Today I will look for ways to share God’s love.
Prayer: Dear Lord, teach me how to share your love with others. Amen.
