Flying after running 20 miles

I was there so I know it happened. We ran 20 miles on Sunday. My legs are still a bit tight and I am still a bit tired. When I tell people (non runners) it is funny to see their eyes glaze over. It seems impossible or at least improbable to them.

It was not easy. We ran from downtown Charleston over the Cooper River bridge through Mt. Pleasant over the Isle of Palms connector to Breach Inlet. Even driving that distance seems long. And we started at 4am. Yes, 4am in the pitch dark. But all four of us made it.

When I kept looking towards where we were headed it did seem daunting. I was cautious not to wish it over. I wanted to enjoy the journey as much as I could. I wanted to remember that this was bringing me one step closer to being ready for my marathon. And that is really what the run was all about.

Running 20 miles was a sweet victory. Yes, in spite of my slightly sore body I cannot stop smiling.

"Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it."
